Second 100 for 2008 Paint the Parks Competition

Two passions have dominated Richard’s life - the natural environment and painting it. His love of the outdoors leads Richard to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University and a career as a Wetlands Biologist for the Environmental Protection Agency.

Richard Prather’s style, media of choice and subject matter have all changed over the years. At first, being a trained biologist, he sought to portray his subjects as technically accurate as possible. However, it wasn’t long before he realized something was missing – he felt that his work lacked a sense of emotion and mood. Ultimately Richard left the studio and began to paint en plein air and found that with the in-the-moment connection, which allowed the emotion, feeling was coming through. Prather’s desire is that he can continue to improve his abilities as an artist and that his work will be deemed by some as meaningful and pleasurable.
